The Pines will be running a series of online webinars (using MS TEAMS) on various aspects of Food and Health in Children. These seminars will be led by Dave Rex, Specialist Dietitian and are open to parents/carers and professionals in the Highland area. Spaces are limited to 18 per session so that Q&A is manageable.

If you would like to register for one or more of the modules, please email anya.dunning@highland.gov.uk or click on the appropriate buttons below, as soon as possible and at least one week before the date of the seminar you are trying to book. Please provide your full name, phone number and area you stay (or work) or your postcode. Please only register if you are confident you will be able to attend. We expect a high demand for the limited number of places.

Module 1 - How do I know my child’s diet is good enough?

This module will build on what parents and carers know about the nutrition that children need. It will ensure they have the knowledge and confidence to know which nutrients are present, and which are missing or present too infrequently or in insufficient quantities compared to requirements. The session will discuss the importance of hydration, fibre, protein, energy, vitamins and minerals and how to assess a child’s diet against these requirements. There will also be some reflection on the likely impact of not getting enough of each of these.

Next Date: Tuesday 29th October 2024 - 6.30pm to 8.15pm

Module 2 - Does my child need micronutrient supplements?

Children with limited diets are more likely to need the addition of vitamins and minerals as a supplement. This module will ensure that parents and carers have the knowledge needed to ensure that any supplements they choose, are carefully matched to the gaps in the diet. There will also be some discussion of the difference supplements can make and in what timescale. We will discuss the idea of “Brain selective” nutrients, including Omega 3, and what this means in practice. Finally, we will reflect on the aspects of diet that supplements cannot cover.

Next Date: Tuesday 5th November 2024 - 6.30pm to 8.15pm

This seminar will explore the connection between eating patterns and brain function over minutes, hours, weeks and months. It will include discussion around regular eating, processed foods, micronutrient intake and the impact on the brain over different timescales. It will also explore the connection between diet, the gut and the brain. Finally, we will discuss food craving and intolerance.

Module 4 - I know what my child needs, but how do I get them to eat it?!

This workshop will explore the reasons that some children are especially limited in their food choices and discuss some practical tips to influencing their food preferences. We will explore both psychological and sensory barriers to progress and how to overcome these. Importantly, we will also discuss how so much of what we try is well intentioned but ends up making things worse! Finally, we will reflect on the concept of the “Good enough” diet.
