What is ADHD?

ADHD is an abbreviation for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.  It's also the official name for what is sometimes referred to as attention-deficit disorder (ADD)

It is a common neurodevelopmental condition that can impact on focus, impulse control and emotional responses

ADHD is often diagnosed in childhood but sometimes isn't diagnosed until teen years or later (ADHD symptoms may persist into adulthood).

Children with ADHD may have difficulty with:

Children and young people with ADHD and their families (and indeed adults with ADHD) may need various kinds of support, for example:

  • Psychoeducation and behavioural strategies/support which could be with either the child/young person (YPinc) or their parents/carers (Pinc)

  • Behavioural therapy

  • ADHD medication (this is as part of a treatment package and must be overseen by an ADHD specialist, this may be your community paediatrician, an ADHD specialist nurse or a child and adolescent psychiatrist)

  • Classroom accommodations
